Yes, I did it: 36 Days of Type.
It started with 3 dimensional abstract compositions made with wooden blocks, plastic parts, wires, strings, etc. Then lightened them with strong lights for a wide variety of shades and high-contrast shadows. Then photographed and edited them. Then they were simplified and traced. Then reduced to their basic geometric shapes. Then printed one of them, taped it to a wall and mapped a projector on it.
